Summary: It’s potentially deadly, highly infectious – particularly to our babies –  yet making friends with it makes us healthier.

Stress, all parents experience it, often on a daily – even hourly basis. In fact 70 percent of mums in the U.S. describe mothering as  “incredibly stressful”, and 96 percent feel that our mums were a lot less stressed than we are today. And a primary mum stressor, aside from money worries, are concerns about our kids, particularly the question as to whether we are doing enough for them as parents.

And here’s the most stressful fact of all… stress is now the number one killer in the US, causing a ‘deterioration in everything from your gums to your heart’.

But wait the news on stress has just got worse, scientists have now discovered that our stress is highly contagious to our own babies…

Scientists having now shown that ‘12-month-old boys and girls not only pick up that their mother is under pressure, they also start to become anxious themselves.

And the more pressured the woman felt, the greater the effect on the child, the journal Psychological Science reports.’

Apparently we can turn this stressful situation around 360 degrees and make stress a life-saver, rather than life taker. In this TED talk http://www.ted.com/talks/kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_your_friend.html

psychologist Kelly McGonigal reveals that stress is only harmful if we believe it to be our enemy.

‘The new science of stress says that it’s how we think about our stress that determines whether it hurts or heals us.’ ’ McGonigal tells us ‘ The trick is to get better at stress, to recognize it as: ‘“This is my body helping me rise to this challenge”. And when you view stress in that way your body believes you and your stress response becomes healthier. Stress releases oxytocin – the empathy hormone, so your stress response wants you to be surrounded by people who can help you….Our stress response has an in built mechanism for stress resilience, and that mechanism is human connection”
