Refusing to eat or picky eating

This works really well:

GIVE A CHOICE:

  • Allow your children to feel some control over their lives by asking them to choose between two options that suit you.
  • For example:  “Would you like to eat peas or carrots first?”

Here is another suggestion:

 “I” STATEMENT:

  • Your “I” Statement is telling your child what is acceptable to you.
  • Example ”I give desserts to children who eat their meal”.
  • This statement needs to be voiced positively (unlike a threat) in order to reduce the potential power struggle over finishing the meal.
  • It needs to start with “I” or “my” (and if speaking for the family or couple, it starts with “we” or “our”).
  • Remember that your statement must be one that you can actually enforce.
