“Calling planet child!” Sometimes our children are physically here yet their minds have wandered elsewhere and it becomes a real challenge to bring them back to the here and now! The trick is to try to reach children on their own wavelength and gently guide their attention back to the task at hand.
Here is a sample of some of our easy and effective tools for solving this issue
This works really well:
ACTIVE AND REFLECTIVE LISTENING
- Using empathy encourage your child to identify where his or her difficulty in concentrating lies.
- As your child begins to talk, make sure that s/he knows that you are paying attention through reflecting (or echoing) what s/he is saying.
- Try to give examples of when you found it hard to concentrate yourself and how you managed to bring your focus back.
Here is another suggestion:
ENGAGING YOUR CHILD
- Try some concentration building exercises together.
- Memory games, story telling, even drawing exercises can all help your child learn to focus his or her attention on the task at hand.
- You might also consider following some basic ‘mindfulness’ or meditation techniques.
