Parenting Tip – Asking your child “What are you going to do about it?” will lead them to self-responsibility

Coaching our children to generate solutions to their own problems, rather than trying to fix them ourselves, gives them much more incentive to be pro-active and independent. When children are able to identify a solution to their problem and then solve the issue for themselves, they feel empowered and become more confident in their own ability to find solutions to problems in the long-term.

Allowing children to take responsibility for their actions and encouraging them to find solutions to their problems is so much more effective in the long-term than letting them assume that their parents will always be there to fix their problems for them!

  • Place ownership of the problem on your child’s shoulders by asking, “What could you do about it?” (for issues that may need resolution in the future).
  • Or, “Sounds like you’re not very happy with what happened? What could you do differently next time?” (for issues that have already taken place).

It may sound very simple, but it is highly effective and this alone could save you up to an hour a day in power struggles – so try it and let us know if it has worked!

Inspirational Quotes:

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” – Coco Chanel

“If you choose to not deal with an issue, then you give up your right of control over the issue and it will select the path of least resistance.” – Susan Del Gatto
