‘I hate school!’, the phrase we parents dread because it’s so hard to know what to do to help, or what’s really going on at school. In truth, there are very few children who enjoy school 100% of the time, but there are some children who do appear to have more difficulty going to school. Now is a good opportunity to discuss the whole issue of school with our kids, trade our own school days stories and get to the bottom of why school is making them miserable.
Here is a sample of some of our easy and effective tools for solving this issue
This works really well:
ACTIVE AND REFLECTIVE LISTENING
- It may be your child just wants to get something off his or her chest, or bring a concern to your attention.
- Often just listening to your children and showing them that you have heard and empathise with their feelings will help them cope with the situation.
- For the moment hold back with your remedies.
Then try this:
GENERATE SOLUTIONS:
- Having listened to what your child has to say, ask if there is something specific that is bothering him or her, such as a relationship/rapport with friends, teacher, etc.
- Then encourage him or her to find solutions to the problem.
- Share your own recollections of the ups and downs of school life.
