Refusing to have their hair washed

January 1st, 2014 | 3 to 6 years | Short Tips and Quotes | Bedtime |

If our children loathe having their hair washed, this regular ordeal can easily become something that we all dread. But there are tips to take the sting out of this necessary procedure and even make it something we can look forward to!

Here is a sample of some of our easy and effective tools for solving this issue.

This works really well:

PLAY AND HUMOUR:

  • For example: “I know you don’t like having your hair washed but how about if we make it fun and give you a crazy ‘shampoo hairstyle’?”

Here is another suggestion:

GIVE A CHOICE:

  • Allowing our children to decide between two options puts them in the driving seat and feel less ‘at the mercy’ of the situation!
  • For example: “Would you like to squeeze out the shampoo or shall I?”, or  “Would you like to scrub your hair or shall I do it for you”?

Then you could try:

“I” STATEMENT:

  • Make a non negotiable statement that you can carry out.
  • For example: “Tonight I will read a story to children who have clean hair”.

These are just a few examples of our Best of Parenting Tools. You can find more ideas and solutions to typical parenting challenges in our book ‘Kids Don’t Come With a Manual – The Essential Guide to a Happy Family Life‘.
