Parenting Tip – Raising your children to become autonomous and self-reliant

If we wish to raise our children to become autonomous, self-reliant adults we must learn to ‘take a step back’ and allow them to make mistakes and take responsibility for their own actions. So, here are five top tips to help you do just exactly that:

1. Try to never do for them what they can do by themselves – for eg. dressing up once they are three years and older, homework once they are at school, etc.

2. Give them age appropriate chores – to learn to be more responsible and feel more useful.

3. Allow them to make mistakes, and when they do them, don’t tell them “I told you so”, but instead, give them empathy and let them know that they will have other opportunities to practice and to get it ‘right’

4. Actions speak louder than words – Model the behaviour you wish to see from them

5. Use positive language – Avoid using the words ‘can’t’, ‘don’t’ and ‘no’ too often

Inspirational quotes:

“You have to do your own growing no matter how tall your grandfather was.” - Abraham Lincoln

“Helping out at home raises self-esteem: when parents insist that kids do their chores, they are letting them know that they’re not just loved, they are needed.” – Wendy Mogel
