Parenting Tip – How to get your children to contribute to family life

December 1st, 2013 | 3 to 6 years | Short Tips and Quotes | Parenting tips

Various studies have shown that children who perform chores and contribute to family life are far more likely to grow up to be successful (in all senses of the word) adults.

Here are five tips that you can use to encourage your children to contribute to family life:

  1. Learn to overcome your own resistance to do it for them because you will do a better, faster job. Let them learn and make mistakes.
  2. The moment you see that your children want to help, give them age appropriate chores, introducing new chores as they grow and making it part of their everyday routine.
  3. Praise the effort rather than the deed, and don’t reprimand them for getting it wrong otherwise they will be discouraged from trying again.
  4. Turn chores into a fun game rather than a grind.
  5. Encourage chores to be done through intrinsic motivation rather than financial benefit or other forms of ‘reward’.
